Prescription requirements at CPSA

Valid patient prescriptions must be supplied for all regulated products.

  • Highly controlled products require the original prescription to be submitted to the pharmacy.
  • Prescriptions are valid for 30 days from the date of issue by the prescriber (unless repeats are indicated).
  • Most prescriptions remain valid for a maximum of 6 months or 6 orders from the date of issue.

Our pharmacists require an up-to-date prescription for every order. We cannot process any order until the mandatory legal documents are in place.

Why these rules matter

Prescriptions are legal documents. We are required to follow the regulations in the South African Medicines and Related Substances Act 101 of 1965 and the South African Pharmacy Act.

Our pharmacists and pharmacist assistants must handle, interpret, authenticate and record prescriptions correctly. Failure to do so can result in professional action by the South African Pharmacy Council.
